Londonderry

We have travelled the spectacular Antrim Coastal route north of Belfast. On the left hand side green fields dotted with sheep, to the right the North Irish Sea (complete with dolphins) and quaint fishing villages. We stopped briefly at Carnlough, then on to Bushmills, home of the world famous Bushmills’s Whiskey Distillery - the oldest licensed distillery in the world, founded in 1608. We had a tour of the works then whiskey tasting. Onward to the Giant’s Causeway, a prehistoric geological phenomenon. There are an estimated 37,000 basalt columns extending from cliff down to the sea. It is a mile walk down, but as it was raining we opted for the shuttle bus. That night we stopped in Londonderry (aka Derry). After dinner 3 of us ventured to a few nearby Pubs and discovered live Celtic music in one.

Today we had a guided tour of the Derry Town Wall and the history of when and why, plus more about “The Troubles” during the 1967-1998 period. There are many murals depicting these events. After we drove through County Armagh to Ulster American Folk Park. This is an open air museum depicting life of Irish peasant farmers in the 1800’s, and the migration of thousands to America and their changed lives there. We are in Enniskillen tonight. Don’t be fooled by the blue skies, our days have been interspersed with showers and it is quite cool.
